Simple Home Security Upgrades That Don’t Feel Overkill

I’ve lived in a lot of shared houses over the years. Old terraces, dodgy locks, front doors that look solid but absolutely aren’t. Add working from home, expensive gear lying around (music kit, cameras, laptops), and suddenly you start thinking a bit more about home security.

I’m not trying to turn my place into Fort Knox. These are just simple upgrades I’ve actually used — stuff that quietly does its job without making your house feel like a prison.

Motion Sensor Outdoor Lights

This is the easiest win. Motion lights make a house feel instantly less inviting to mess with. They’re amazinnngg for late-night returns, bins, or just knowing someone’s near the door. Cheap, effective, and low effort.

Door & Window Entry Sensors

Simple sensors that alert you when a door or window opens. I like these because they’re subtle — no alarms blaring, just awareness. Especially useful in shared houses where people come and go at odd hours. Quiet reassurance.

Door Camera (Wired or Battery)

Okay okay okay I know I said no overkill — but a door camera is genuinely useful. Deliveries, missed knocks, and knowing who’s been near the door. I work from home a lot, and this one just makes life easier.

Door Reinforcement Lock

This one surprised me. A small, solid lock that reinforces the door frame itself. Cheap, incredddible peace of mind, and takes minutes to fit. Now I’m no scientist but I’m pretty sure this adds way more strength than the main lock alone.

Indoor Security Camera

Perfect for shared houses, home studios, or when you’re away for a few days. I’ve had gear set up in five different properties over the years — this is an easy way to keep an eye on things without going full CCTV operator.

Window Privacy Film

This is such an underrated one. Lets light in but stops people seeing straight through. Great if you’ve got ground-floor windows or expensive stuff inside. Looks clean, feels subtle, and doesn’t scream “security”.

CCTV In Operation Sign

This one’s more psychological than technical — and that’s the point. A simple sign is often enough to make someone think twice. Costs next to nothing and works quietly in the background. Low-key genius.

I’ve learned that home security doesn’t need to be dramatic. A few small, sensible upgrades go a long way — especially if you live with others, work from home, or just want to sleep a bit easier.
